ABOUT THE ARTWORK: Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains (富川⼭山居图)

Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains (富川⼭山居图) is a generative digital art installation that created by Cao Yuxi’s studio as part of hIs QRC (Quick Response Code) project, which is using the halftone pattern machine learning technique to transform visually random QR code pattern into a human-readable image but still keep the original scanning function of QR code.
With the global technology evolution of image recognition and mobile device, the QR Code has been widely spread and has become a visual symbol for the current cybernetic economy and social context. Especially in the rising economy zone like China and most other Asian countries, Qr code let you hyperlink and bookmark the physical world; It enables everything from paying or collecting payment, adding a friend’s contact, subscribing to news to renting a bike, a car or take the bus or subway.
Because global overwhelming QR visual wave, artist Caoyuxi(James) find the abstractive pattern of the QR code is a perfect visual sample that compresses both the interactive logic and critical cultural meaning over social context by it. That’s why he reprinted an ancient Chinese painting: Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains (富川⼭山居图) with the QR code visual pattern by using the machine learning technique.
The original painting is a sizeable hand-scroll painting done by Huang Gongwang between the year of 1348 and 1350; it depicts a landscape in the area around the Fuchun River where he was traveling and residing. Fuchun river is located in Zhejiang China, where has the traditional famous
of trade and economy culture in history. In modern China, the painting was referenced as a cultural symbol for flourishing economical accomplishment.
